MAXINE Peake stars in Steve Reeves’s new British psychological thriller, Keeping Rosy (15) in a one-off screening in the Discover Tuesdays slot at City Screen, York, on Tuesday at 6.15pm.

Peake plays Charlotte, an ambitious workaholic whose life unravels after she is turned down for promotion at the media agency she helped to build. Crushing rejection followed by a freak accident throws her meticulously organised life into disarray, dragging her into a nightmare that soon spirals out of control.

“Recalling the dark wit and tension of Alfred Hitchcock, and powered by a central performance of real spirit and pathos from Maxine Peake, Keeping Rosy is as humane and heartfelt as it is stylish and unpredictable,” says Dave Taylor, City Screen’s marketing manager.

Meanwhile, switching from Rosy to Rose, the French connection in York continues after Le Grand Depart with the 20th anniversary celebrations of L’Alliance Française de York. City Screen’s contribution is to present a special screening of La Vie En Rose (12) on Thursday, July 17, at 6pm.

Olivier Dahan’s biographical film from 2007 casts Marion Cotillard as chanteuse Edith Piaf, the audacious Little Sparrow who rose from the slums of Paris to the limelight of New York. Her life was a constant battle to sing and survive, to live and love, as she flew so high with such bravado but, blighted by a self-destructive bent, she inevitably burnt her wings.

City Screen is offering ten per cent off selected French dishes and a free coffee in the Riverside café-bar to accompany Dahan’s film.
