FILM reels and bicycle wheels come together in celebration of the Tour De France in a National Trust series of Tour De Cinema free outdoor cinema screenings this spring and early summer.

Organised by the Sheffield Doc/Fest, the first such show at Malham Cove on April 26 was a sell-out and the second was held at Nunnington Hall, near Helmsley, last Saturday.

Coming next will be Brimham Rocks, Summerbridge, near Harrogate, this Saturday when demand is expected to be high once more as visitors rush to book free tickets for a Yorkshire Festival 2014 event that pays tribute to 100 years of cycling. In keeping with the energetic spirit of Le Grand Depart, those visitors are being encouraged to arrive by bike.

High-definition big outdoor screens will be set against the National Trust's Yorkshire backdrops in this series of evening screenings of classic films and cutting-edge documentaries, not only at Brimham Rocks this weekend, but also at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, near Ripon, on June 14 and Ravenscar, on the Yorkshire coast, on June 21.

From 5pm to 10pm at each location, visitors can enjoy films about cycling and Yorkshire life, including Alan Bennett’s rarely seen A Day Out and The Big Melt, co-directed by Martin Wallace and Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker.

Made in 1972, A Day Out was Bennett's first work for television, presenting a beautiful, simple picture of a Halifax cycling club's outing to Bolton Abbey in the summer of 1911; The Big Melt, a documentary film about the Sheffield steel industry, combines archive footage with a live soundtrack. Other films will span more archive documentaries and "the very latest in contemporary cinema".

Joanna Royle, the National Trust's head of marketing and supporter development, says: "We want to encourage visitors to support Tour De Cinema at one of our forthcoming screenings and turn up on two wheels. We want them to experience cycling in all its glory - the fresh air, fun, family and a shared appreciation of the magnificent countryside.

" By contrasting our stunning landscapes with high-definition big screens, we're delighted to be presenting a range of specially selected films on cycling and Yorkshire life for all to enjoy. Tickets are free but getting booked up fast, so reserve your tickets now."

The National Trust in Yorkshire describes itself as being "serious about cycling".

"There are many cycling routes to and from the various sites to suit both the leisurely and the competitive cyclist," the Trust states.

"Cycling is not just great for the environment, it's healthy and fun for all the family too. And as a thank you to visitors for turning up on two wheels, the Trust makes a promise to ensure that all of their sites are 'cycle-friendly'. So there's a place to lock up bikes, the team will be on hand should cyclists get a puncture, and visitors can enjoy a free cuppa when buying a meal or snack."
