CITY Screen, York, is to host a talk on Somalia by University of York research fellow Kathryn Rzeszut after tonight’s 6pm screening of Captain Phillips.

The blockbuster hit film stars Tom Hanks as the captain of an American cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. “Yet, with all Hollywood movies, it’s difficult to determine how much is fact and how much is a fictionalised account,” says Dave Taylor, City Screen’s marketing manager.

“That’s why we’re pleased to be able to offer City Screen customers the chance to learn more about the background to the conflict in Somalia, and first-hand information of how the country is faring at its attempts to emerge from years of civil war, sectarian conflict, and humanitarian crises.”

Kathryn Rzeszut, a research fellow at the University of York’s post-war reconstruction and development unit, has returned from Somalia recently and will discuss her work in the north eastern African country and take questions from the audience.

“Piracy is often the first thing that comes to mind when Somalia is mentioned, but it’s only one aspect of the incredibly complex dynamics arising from years of conflict and weak governance,” she says.
