CITY Screen has a bumper crop of documentaries, archive film footage and preview screenings on Sunday, spilling into Monday.

Most intriguing will be the premiere of Folie à Deux – A Madness Made Of Two (15), the York story of entrepreneur/risk-taker Helen Heraty, John and their eight children, filmed over five years at Grays Court on Chapter House Street, the oldest inhabited house in England.

Made for Labour Of Love Films by director and co-producer Kim Hopkins, this documentary follows Helen and John’s progress as they dream of transforming the crumbling national monument into the country’s most exclusive historic hotel.

However, with a huge bank loan in place, the credit crunch bites and the dream becomes a living nightmare, fuelled by a battle royal with the next-door neighbours, the National Trust’s Treasurer’s House.

Helen Heraty, who also modelled for L K Bennett during this time, will attend question-and-answer sessions after screenings at 3pm on Sunday and 6.30pm on Monday.

Another Yorkshire story rises to the surface in Sunday’s special event at 6.15pm: ‘Reel’ Ale with the Yorkshire Film Archive.

The YFA has delved into its vaults and opened some cans to present a film show themed around beer and brewing in God’s Own Country.

Graham Relton will host the evening, giving a taste of the film archive, from an early beer advert to the closing of a men-only pub; from beer-sponsored races at York to Yorkshire’s oldest brewery.

To tie in with this Timothy Taylor’s-supported event, City Screen’s Riverside bar will be serving real ales from the York Brewery, Rudgate and Copper Dragon breweries.

At 1pm on Sunday, Beebon Kidron’s documentary In Real Life (15) asks what exactly is the Internet and what is it doing to our children?

Taking a journey from British teenagers’ bedrooms to Silicon Valley, Kidron suggests that despite the promise of free and open connection, young people are increasingly ensnared in a commercial world.

Weaving together interviews with UK teens and Internet experts Jimmy Wales, Clay Shirky, Cory Doctorow and Sherry Turkle, Kidron builds her case and ponders whether we can afford to stand by while our children, trapped in their “24/7 connectivity”, are being outsourced to the net.

After the screening, a panel discussion hosted by Jon Snow with Kidron and selected guests will be shown via satellite from City Screen’s sister cinema, The Ritzy in Brixton.

Woody Allen devotees should note that City Screen will be hosting preview screenings of Blue Jasmine (12), his new movie starring Cate Blanchett, on Sunday at noon and 6pm. Apparently it “contains moderate references to sex and suicide”.
