Dawn Brooks - Sequence, Duckett and Jeffreys Gallery, Malton August 8 to September 1

DAWN Brooks will attend the launch party for her print show at Duckett and Jeffreys Gallery in Malton on Thursday from 6pm to 9pm.

The evening will be a chance to talk to Dawn about Sequence, her new body of stark and intimate abstract monochrome prints.

At present Dawn is the resident printmaker at Crescent Arts, in Scarborough, where she has a studio and teaches printmaking courses.

Her work combines drawing with drypoint etching and collagraph print-making, as Dawn builds up layers of abstract marks that give her prints a subtlety and depth to accentuate their physical presence.

“I develop the printing plate, instinctively reacting to marks as they’re made,” she says. “The process retains a spontaneity and fluidity while exploiting the technical discipline of printmaking. The sequence and rhythm of lines creates the illusion of floating between, or passing through, veils of thin air.”

Most of her prints are produced as small limited editions but each print is unique as a result of the inking-up process that introduces subtle differences and qualities to each image.

Dawn was an award winner in the A4 Printmakers International Competition in 2010 and latterly she has been selected for exhibitions at the West Yorkshire Print Workshop, A4 Printmakers in Cornwall and RE OPEN, an international exhibition at the Bankside Gallery in London.

Her Sequence show will run at Duckett and Jeffreys, in Old Maltongate, from Wednesday to September 1. Ian and Stef Mitchell’s gallery is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 4pm, and at all other times by appointment on 01377 236008.
