YORK artist Sophie Foster has been creating art at a snail’s pace for a prestigious exhibition in Sunderland to celebrate the International Day Of Slowness on Thursday (June 21).
Her practice involves “choosing and editing natural processes in an attempt to create something beautiful”. She allows nature to take its course, whether it be a snail eating a trail through paper or the wind blowing a pencil to create a drawing.
It was her snails that caught the eye of staff at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland, leading to them inviting her to stage an exhibition entitled Transitions: At A Snail’s Pace.
Sophie, aged 24, took A-levels at York College before studying English literature, history of art and life-drawing at Newcastle University. She has exhibited work in Britain and Poland.
Her National Glass Centre show will run until July 12.
