ARTISTS throughout the city are once again preparing to open their doors to show off their work.
York Open Studios, which is now in its eleventh year, will feature up to 70 artists opening their studios and inviting people to view and discuss their work.
The event will run over two weekends – from Friday, March 23 to Sunday, March 25 and from Saturday, March 31 to Sunday, April 1.
Ruth King, chairman of York Open Studios, said: “It is a fantastic opportunity to experience first-hand the work of many of York’s professional contemporary artists and makers as they open to the public their studios, workshops and exhibitions all over York.”
The artists taking part include Sandra Middleton, who works with hand-dyed silks and velvets to create wall hangings, and Emily Harvey, whose textured prints are created from plates made with everyday materials.
Woodturner Jon Cooper specialises in wooden bowls and vessels made from local hardwoods and Suzanne Decker makes glass forms from reclaimed material.
This year bursaries have been presented to three very different artists – Lyn Wait’s Palindromedome will be exhibited in the basement of Bar Lane Studios, while dance group 103 Falling Birds will stage a participatory performance and Kalindi Kinkali and Belinda Noda will show their collaborative installation Freewheeling at St Nicholas Fields.
Admission to all venues is free. The Open Studios weekends combine the chance to discover creative talent while enjoying wandering around the streets in search of artists’ studios.
The event’s free guide and map and website, www.yorkopenstudios.co.uk sets out the locations of the studios. Opening times across both weekends will be Friday, 6pm to 9pm, Saturday, 10am to 6pm and Sunday, 11am to 5pm.
