ED Kluz’s summer exhibition of paintings, prints and collages at The Gallery @ Hornseys, in Kirkgate, Ripon, opens next Friday, preceded by a private view on Thursday from 6.30pm.

For his Romantic Ruins Today show, he has chosen “not to pursue that well-trodden path leading to the ruins that Cromwell knocked about a bit, and has instead turned his attention to those of a more recent vintage”, as exhibition essayist Horatio Blood puts it. “For, although he has his eye fondly focused on the past, his feet are firmly in the present.”

Mr Blood praises Ed for his romantic sensibility and accomplished aptitude for architectural draughtsmanship.

“His peregrinations take him ‘mid pleasure gardens and palaces, but he is no mere purveyor of the picturesque for its own sake. He possesses a keen sense of place and an enviable ability to capture its spirit,” he observes.

Since his move to London from York, Ed Kluz’s reputation as an artist and designer has grown. Not least he has received commissions from the Victoria & Albert Museum, Newby Hall and the publishers Faber & Faber and Random House.

Welcoming Ed back to Hornseys, where he held his Wunderkammer show last September, Daniel Hornsey says: “His commissions, though impressive, are merely the building blocks of this remarkable young man’s career, with the keystones being his landmark solo exhibitions across the country and beyond. I believe that his work across numerous artistic fields will continue to surprise and delight the ever-increasing number of his followers.”

• Romantic Ruins Today will run until September 11. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm, Monday to Saturday or by appointment on 01765 602878.
