THE paintings of David Fowkes are attracting such great interest at Kentmere House Gallery, York, that gallery owner Ann Petherick has decided to extend the show’s run for a further fortnight.
“David was present at the gallery on February 6, when many of his former students from York College and elsewhere came to renew their friendship,” says Ann. “All described him as an inspirational teacher and one who was genuinely interested in his students.”
David, who is 90, has lived in York since 1980 when he resigned from his post as senior lecturer at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen after 30 years in the painting school. Followers of his work have been travelling from Scotland and elsewhere in the north to attend his Kentmere House debut show.
Many of the paintings for sale are of the landscape and cities of Italy, a country that he visited annually for many years, and there are also landscapes of Scotland and Cornwall, where he also loved to paint. As is Ann’s custom, her gallery in Scarcroft Hill will be open on the first weekend of the month, from 11am to 5pm this Saturday and Sunday, as well as every Thursday evening from 6pm to 9pm and at any other time by appointment on 01904 656507.
“The gallery’s full range of artists will be on show this weekend, including new work from many gallery favourites and new artist Andrew Cheetham, who is based in Scarborough and was latterly the artist-in-residence in Rosedale,” says Ann.
The Paintings Of David Fowkes will run until March 25, after which Kentmere House will continue to exhibit David’s work on a permanent basis.
