The ArtSpace’s new exhibition, York St John: Past & Present, cherry picks work by second and third-year art students and artist alumni from the university.
“The show is as wildly varied as anything we’ve ever done and promises to be exciting and edgy,” says Greg McGee, co-director of the gallery in Tower Street, York.
“Our links with York St John are increasingly strong, and we all had a blast with last year’s group show, which was really a tip of the hat to the energy found among the art students there.”
Greg recalls that debut collaboration as being a solid show full of vim and vinegar. “But there were aspects that needed smoothing and polishing, so we’ve collaborated more closely with head of fine art Roddy Hunter and passed on the lion’s share of responsibility to second-year student Rob Jones to liaise with all exhibitors and curate the final show. This way the York St John influence runs through the exhibition on every level.”
On display will be work by Rob Jones, Nathan Walker, Stevie-Lee Croft, Alice Rowan, Matt Durrant, Charlotte Barnes, Melanie Alexandrou, Jenae Dalton, Julie Bagwash and Jade Blood.
“It’s a real miscellany, and after the riff of solo shows we’ve had, it’s very exciting to see such wildly different responses to exhibiting here at ArtSpace,” says Greg.
The show opens tonight with a preview from 7pm to 9pm and will run until March 24.
