SCALBY printmaker Michael Atkin will give a talk at the Coast Gallery, Cloughton, on Sunday at 3pm about his new book, An Alphabet Of Scarborough, and the accompanying exhibition of images from his A to Z of the East Coast resort.

Only 26 numbered copies of the book are being hand printed, each priced at £2,950, and many of them have been snapped up already by collectors worldwide, most notably by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, which acquired Atkin's three previous artist's books too.

The images are etchings, lino prints and wood engravings, depicting Scarborough landmarks ranging from A is for Art Gallery, through N is for North Bay Railway, to Z is for Zig Zag, depicting the paths above Royal Albert Drive and Marine Drive.

The book is being bound by specialist bookbinders Smith Settle at Yeadon, near Leeds. Each of the 26 numbered copies is accompanied by an extra loose print suitable for framing, with each print matching the number of the book, so the buyer of Book 1 will receive a print of the image for letter A and Book 26, the letter Z.

“I realised one day that I hadn’t done anything on Scarborough for about 30 years," says Atkin. "I liked the idea of doing a series of prints that were naturally limited by their theme – and using the alphabet naturally limited it to 26.”

Atkin runs his own printing press, Bracken Press; his work can be seen in galleries around the world and he is an active member of the Fylingdales Group of Artists, Leeds Fine Artists and The Oxford Guild of Printers. He will be taking part in North Yorkshire Open Studios on June 3, 4, 10 and 11 and has a solo show booked in for the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, from October 10 to November 18.

An Alphabet Of Scarborough can be seen at The Coast Gallery, in the village of Cloughton, near Scarborough, from tomorrow to June 7. Opening hours are 11am to 4pm on weekdays, except Thursdays, and from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry to the gallery and to Michael’s talk is free.
