KENTMERE House Gallery is taking part in York Residents Festival this weekend.

From 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, the Scarcroft Hill gallery will be selling paintings and original prints from £50, with a five per cent discount for residents on those days, plus a free 14-day trial, and the Own Art scheme will be available for interest-free purchases.

The festival is in its 21st year and Ann Petherick's gallery has participated for the past four. "It's always been with great success and we're delighted to have been invited to do so again," she says.

"A gallery in a home setting is still a rarity everywhere: Kentmere House is the only one in York and there are few others in Yorkshire, and I believe many people still feel some trepidation at entering.

Midnight Cat, by Susan Bower

"You would be amazed how many visitors say they have been meaning to come for years but never got round to it,but the festival gives them that little extra incentive. Then there are those – even some living nearby – who say that they didn’t even know about it. We're a little off the beaten track but the festival is the ideal time to sample the unique atmosphere and to introduce it to friends.”

Among the work on show are Freya Horsley’s atmospheric York town-scapes and David Greenwood’s pastels of the Knavesmire area's distinctive red brick houses, executed in his trademark vigorous style. Look out too for exciting new work by Susan Bower, who lives ten miles from York but mostly shows her work in London.

Kentmere House Gallery will be open next weekend too, from 11am to 5pm each day, as well as every Thursday evening, 6pm to 9pm, and at any other time by telephoning in advance on 01904 656507.
