FOR all who enjoyed last year's ceramic poppy display at the Tower of London, and the ongoing display at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Kentmere House Gallery in York is offering an evocative image by London printmaker Susan Short.

"The mass of red from the poppies makes a striking contrast with the texture of the grey stone of the Tower buildings, with the mesmerised onlookers shown in silhouette," says Ann Petherick, owner of the gallery in Scarcroft Hill.

"I chanced upon Susan Short's prints in an exhibition in London, tracked the artist down and brought some of the work to York. Susan is known for her dramatic architectural images, influenced by her daily experience of travelling through the city, and she has shown at the Royal Academy on several occasions and at many London galleries, such as the Barbican Centre and Bankside Gallery."

She is an elected member of Southbank Printmakers and an associate member of the Society of Graphic Fine Artists and her prints have been included in the journal Printmaking Today and in books on printmaking.

“My work explores my surroundings, landscapes and buildings, stimulated by the visual contradictions in the city," says Susan. "Secret spaces may be revealed, or familiar sights suddenly disappear. I hope to capture something about the nature of the constantly changing scene and the people who inhabit it: for example, the long-established communities living in the shadows of new ‘landmark architecture'.”

Susan's work at Kentmere House is an original etching in an edition of 100, priced at £110 unframed, although framing to the customer’s choice can be arranged.

The gallery is open each weekend until December 20, 11am to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday, complemented by late opening on Thursday and December 17, 6pm to 9pm. Visitors are welcome at any other time but please ring 01904 656507 in advance if travelling any distance, advises Ann.
