YORK artist and illustrator Judy Burnett’s new print coincides with the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire.

She has made a limited-edition triptych of the three stages of last week’s race, Bridlington to Scarborough, Selby to York and Wakefield to Leeds, now on sale at Pyramid Gallery, Stonegate, and Blossom Street Gallery, Blossom Street, York.

“Since the excitement generated by the Grand Depart of the Tour de France held in Yorkshire in 2014, cycling fever has gripped York and the surrounding region,” says Judy. “Coloured flags and bicycles have appeared everywhere and a growing number of people have taken to two wheels, and it is this lively, celebratory feeling which I’ve tried to express in these prints.”

Judy’s working method is to make preliminary drawings in small sketchbook diaries.

“In the studio, I develop these in a range of media. I make printed textured papers and use monoprint for the figurative elements of the work,” she says.

“I use collage, torn and scissor-cut, to draw the composition together. The aim is to keep all the mark-making fresh and spontaneous and to echo the power of the elements at the time of observation.”

Judy was involved with further education in art and design for more than 30 years, while also pursuing her career as an illustrator and artist.

She was course leader on the foundation course in art and design at York College and has maintained an interest in education through part-time lecturing and running workshops.

Judy has held solo exhibitions at Pyramid Gallery and Ken Spelman’s Bookshop, York; Amnesty International, York and London; Senior Common Room and Langwith College, University of York; the Turkish Embassy, London; the Oriental Museum, University of Durham; and Walter C Young Center, Florida, United States.
