FOR one day only, art and literature will combine at Hazlewood Castle Hotel, near York, next Tuesday.

Harrogate artist Anita Bowerman will be exhibiting paper cuts and Yorkshire paintings in the Great Hall from 12.30pm to 8pm, and the opening ceremony will be conducted at 1pm by novelist David Nobbs, author of The Rise And Fall Of Reginald Perrin and Pratt Of The Argus.

“It’s really fitting and really pleasing that David is opening this exhibition as he officially opened my gallery and working studio, The Dove Tree Art Studio, a converted 19th century coach house on Back Granville Road, just near Harrogate Theatre, in 2011,” says Anita.

Anita’s work can be seen in rooms around the hotel already. “As artist in residence here, I’ve painted many scenes of the castle and surroundings, including the Cherry Tree Walkway and Vavasour Restaurant,” she says.

“For the past few years, I’ve been developing my paper-cut skills and have just finished cutting my latest piece, of the hotel courtyard, to commemorate the one-day exhibition. In this work, you can see one of the lucky black resident cats that roam the grounds, a bride and groom and a couple of ducks in the courtyard. It’s available to buy as a giclee print and the hotel is giving one away on its Facebook page if you ‘Like’ it.”

Martin Wicks, director of Hazlewood Castle, says: “Anita’s work depicts the right manner and style of Hazlewood and many a visitor comments on the beautiful pictures around the building. In fact we’re displaying some of her works at one of our other hotels, Grants Hotel in Harrogate. I’ve known Anita personally for many years and I’m delighted at her success.”.

General manager Melissa Watson says: “We’ve worked together for a number of years and have celebrated Anita’s work throughout the building. All the new bedrooms in the St Leonard’s wing have their own individual print of the castle and the grounds by Anita. We’re also honoured to be able to sell Anita’s work to our guests.”

Last year, Anita completed a one-metre map cut from one piece of paper showing the route of Le Tour de France stage 1, 2014 – otherwise known as the first day of Le Grand Depart – which took her five months to complete. It shows intricate details, from tiny cyclists on the route with their coloured jerseys, to all the local attractions, historical buildings and figures such as Richard III, complete with tiny animals, birds and people generally enjoying themselves.

Her latest addition to her portfolio, stainless steel work, will be on show too. Anita has worked with her engineer brother, Mason Small, from Guiseley, to develop two pieces so far, a wheel with 12 cyclists cycling around it, commemorating Le Tour, and the Angel of the North.

Anita’s exhibition will feature paper cuts including her Tour de France artwork, new cycling work in paper, the stainless steel works and paintings.

All are available as giclee prints.

Everyone is welcome to the hotel for drinks and canapés at next Tuesday’s event. For free tickets, contact Anita via anitabowerman.co.uk, –visit her studio, or ring Hazlewood Castle on 01937 535315.
