A JETTY stretches out into the still waters of a lake, a tree poised at the tip as though in a moment of reflection; a man hurries up steps at York Railway Station, oblivious to the looped symmetry of railings and rafters around him; a puffin peers into the camera, its face seemingly elongated by the intensity of its gaze.

These are just some of the moments captured by members of the York Photographic Society in this latest batch of photographs, submitted ahead of the society's annual exhibition in York this weekend.

Carol Emmott's photograph of the jetty at Sustons Lac in the South of France was commended at the Yorkshire Photographic Union exhibition held in Halifax in May. You can see why: there is a stillness and a sense of eternity to the photograph which leaps off the printed page.

Harry Silcock's picture of York Station, meanwhile – a symphony of angled bars, curved railings and sweeping roof arches – manages to capture the elaborate beauty of the Victorian building, with the hurrying figure giving the whole a sense of life and movement.

This weekend you will have a chance to see close up more photographs by Society members.

The group will be holding its annual exhibition in the York Medical Society rooms at 23 Stonegate on Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free. And it is a lovely building which is well worth seeing in its own right, says York Photographic Society President Allan Harris. "There's a panelled Jacobean room, and a 'secret' garden which is one of the hidden gems of the city."

All this plus 70 or so photographs arranged through two rooms: that's got to be worth a look, surely?

York Photographic Society annual exhibition, Saturday August 16 (10-5) and Sunday August 17 (11-4), York Medical Society Rooms, 23 Stonegate, York. Entry free.
