THE Arts Barge Project presents “a very different night out” at The Boxing Club Speakeasy at York Boxing Club on June 21, when the joint will be jumping from 8pm to midnight.

“It’s probably not boxing,” says Arts Barge. “More like 1920s and 1930s’ moves and grooves with Rinkadon Jukeboy’s Blind Tiger Dance Band featuring the fantastic Sugar Maybe, plus Brandy Alexander and His Gypsy Jazz Hotshots and Charleston with The Pure Lindy Flappers and Dappers.”

In the spirit of those American times, alcohol is prohibited, says Arts Barge, but in fact a cheap Prohibition Bar will be serving hooch, bathtub gin and other juices such as lager in teacups.

Should you be hungry, homemade Sloppy Joes – both meat and veggie – will be on the menu too.

You are invited to don your glad rags for the Speakeasy’s Vintage Dance Party at The Boxing Club, in the Enterprise Complex ,at The Maltings, Walmgate, York. Tickets cost £5 in advance online at theartsbargeproject.com or £7 on the door from 7.30pm.

If you you want to cut a rug on the night, you can learn the moves by attending Pure Lindy’s Charleston class for beginners on Tuesday at 8.30pm at Tramways Working Men’s Club, Mill Street, York, with further classes to follow each Tuesday at £5 per session.

The Jack Raine Foundation provides the York Boxing Club venue in kind, which in turn enables the Arts Barge Project to renovate its Selby Tony barge more quickly. “We’re now plotting ways of returning the foundation’s favour with some exciting partnership projects,” says Arts Barge.

“Look out for more information soon.”

As well as monthly events at The Boxing Club, the Arts Barge Riverside Festival in Tower Gardens will return in August.
