CREATE 14, the annual event for York St John University students to show their talents to the public, is up and running until June 2.

The programme run by the Faculty of Arts includes dance recitals, fine art exhibitions, literature and history showcases and theatre performance, much to the delight of the faculty dean, Dr Fiona Thompson.

"The sheer wealth of talent, the breadth and depth of achievement, the passion, the energy, the emotion, the creativity is awe-inspiring," she says.

"I acknowledge and respect the dedication our students have to their ‘art’, whatever form that takes, which enables them to push boundaries and find their own voices, supported by creative academics, technicians and administrative support.”

Among the highlights of Create 14 will be 12 different theatre performances, most notably one about love, remorse and loss produced by students who engaged with women at HMP Askham Grange.

Dance performances will make their way through York sites and festival audiences also can enjoy a series of concerts, culminating in a final performance at the York Guildhall. History students will highlight the stories behind a selection of objects from the York Castle Museum.

Create 14 will run in venues across the city, such as the Royal York Hotel, The Duchess live music bar and the Hospitium in the Museum Gardens, as well as at York St John’s campus in Lord Mayor's Walk.

"There's something for everyone and our ambition is for each year’s Create festival to be bigger and more magical and to take us out of the campus and further into the city," says Dr Thompson. "This year’s looks as if it will live up to that ambition.”
