FROM painting and drawing to video and performance, the Dimidium art exhibition will showcase the diverse talents of York St John University’s Fine Art students from tomorrow until Saturday.

In all, 32 third-year students will be displaying their work in collaboration with the New School House Gallery, in Peasholme Green, York.

The four-day free exhibition is a chance to discover the latest paintings, sculpture, print and film from the next generation of York’s artists. It is a culmination of the past two and a half years of work for the emerging artists who hope to make a big impact on York and Yorkshire’s art community.

Robert Teed, co-director of New School House Gallery, says: “We’re delighted to be working with York St John students on this exhibition. The work they have produced is fresh and vibrant with a real maturity to it. This is one of the most engaging and diverse exhibitions in York at the moment.”

Among the students featured in the show will be Natalie Clarke. “This show is our first opportunity to exhibit as a collective,” she says. “For me personally, it's the fulfilment of a lifelong dream: I grew up in York and it's humbling to think of my work being on public display in the city.”

Fiona Thompson, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at York St John, says: “This is the first public exhibition from our current third years. The high standards of contemporary work being produced this year reflect the dedication, enthusiasm and creativity of both students and staff. This show provides a brilliant opportunity to showcase that work.”

Dimidium marks the half-way point of the third-year studies. “There’s a lot of hard work that goes on behind the scenes to get to this point,” says senior lecturer Helen Turner.

Previous collaborations between the New School House Gallery and York St John include The Stall Of Gathered Economies, last May’s project directed by the renowned artist John Newling, and Project:26, another student-run exhibition at the beginning of 2013.

A number of students have been involved in a range of York exhibitions, including Illuminating York, John Newling’s Market Of Ideas, Gnome and the Drawing On The Walls York Art Gallery event.

Gallery opening hours are 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The show opens tonight at 6pm.
