Jonathan Mayor, Hyena Lounge Comedy Club, July 15

YORK has a new Mayor in the city tomorrow: blossoming comedian Jonathan Mayor, headline act for the Hyena Lounge Comedy Club’s 8pm bill in the City Screen Basement bar.

“His is a name hardly anyone has heard of, but 25 minutes of his comedy gold leaves his name etched on to the memory of everyone who has seen him,” says promoter Toby Clouston-Jones.

“A mix of camp innuendo and scathing material bombards the audience into submission as he crams so many jokes and pithy observations into his set.”

Storyteller Joe Lycett, the 2010 Chortle Best Newcomer, returns to the Hyena club only a week after he last played there; Ben Van De Velde, Comedy Cafe New Act of the Year in 2011, replaces the previously advertised Katie Mulgrew; and Danny Deegan is the host.

The Hyena Lounge’s Edinburgh Preview season continues on Sunday with Andrew Lawrence’s new show, the self-explanatory Andrew Lawrence Is Coming To Get You, at 7.30pm.

The “creepy-faced ginger reject”, as he calls himself, will be unleashing a tirade of pent-up, festering ire at a vicious tempo but with a poet’s vocabulary.

“Andrew will return to the Hyena Lounge in November as part of the first leg of his extensive UK tour, so we can’t wait to see how the show evolves,” says Toby. Doors open at 7.15pm tomorrow and 7pm on Sunday. Box office: 00871 902 5726 or hyenalounge.com
