FOLLOWING the success of his 2010 tour, Al Murray extended his tour, Barrel of Fun, into 2011, and rolled into York as the character we all know so well, the Pub Landlord.
The ‘Guv’ arrived on stage to the loud cheers, accompanied by a fistful of beer. He had everyone in fits of giggles as he was instantly aware of the male pattern baldness facing him. He openly referred to it as the ‘stepping stones’ to the stage.
Al surveyed the “beautiful British people” for a likely candidate to be prime target of his witty banter. He had an incredible skill of interacting with the crowd, chatting to a mixture of anxious, but excitable individuals to create a story through their professions and everyday lives.
He also logged the drinks chosen by some members of the audience, resulting in confiscation for those not abiding by the rules...‘‘Pint for the fella, glass of white wine/fruit-based drink for the lady!”
The show went on to a hilarious geography lesson, where the crowd was entertained by jibes about Britain and her neighbours. Everybody was in hysterics with the impressions he attempted to portray of the Scots, the Irish, Geordies, Scousers and, of course, the people of Yorkshire.
Al Murray is a comedy genius and is now one of the most recognisable and successful comics in the UK and what a delight to have him perform at The Grand Opera House.
