JOBY “Lovely Face” Mageean and fellow Geordie comic Si Beckwith head down to York from Newcastle tonight to play early Edinburgh Fringe previews at the Duke’s Comedy Night at 8pm.

“Combining an amiable nature with a piercing wit, Si Beckwith cuts an assured and engaging presence on stage,” says promoter Daniel Triscott, welcoming the surrealist Beckwith’s return to York, where he was a Great Yorkshire Fringe New Act Of The Year semi-finalist last year.

“With his endearing, relatable material, mixed with sillier ideas and a cheeky and charming way with words, this funny man has become a much sought-after compère too.

“The ability to go from warm and witty to acerbic and sharp makes Beckwith an act who will holds a crowd’s attention and deliver big laughs.”

After Beckwith’s 30-minute “half Edinburgh preview” support slot, Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year 2016 winner Joby Mageean gives an hour-long full preview showcase of Joby Mageean – Good Egg in the second half.

“There goes Joby,” they say. “Such a good egg!”. “Well, no-one says that, obviously; people don’t talk like that,” says Daniel.

“But, nevertheless, Joby has always had trouble shaking his nice-boy persona, so he’s embarked on a solo comedy show to prove to people how much of a blummin’ bad boy he is, for heaven’s sake! So join him for an hour of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll; well, stories, songs and a baritone ukulele.”

Buoyed by the response to his first Edinburgh preview with Tom Little and Jake Donaldson at the Duke of York pub, in King’s Square, on April 4, Daniel says: “At one point I counted 46 people who turned up to watch, and for a venue that can really only hold roughly 30 tops, this obviously meant it felt utterly rammed.

“I was genuinely blown away with how popular it was. If that show’s anything to go by, these Edinburgh previews are going to be fantastic. Plus with Si and Joby as the guests for tonight, I’m 100 per cent certain this’ll be the case and then some.

“It’ll be hosted again by my amiable self and I suspect people will need to get there real early to pick up a seat because the Duke’s Comedy Night is starting to build a real reputation for itself. It’s paying off in terms of regulars and new faces who want be part of York’s number one free monthly comedy – and coincidentally there just so happens to be no others!”
