ROB Auton returns to his old home city of York to present The Sleep Show at the Burning Duck Comedy Club, in The Basement, City Screen, York, on Sunday night.

"This show is about sleep," says Auton. "It is suitable for those who have slept." Not much detail there, but why not let Rob tell you about himself and his thoughts on life.

"I was born in York, I now live in Leyton in London. I enjoy gardening and eating lasagne. I am infuriated by slugs in the kitchen but respect them for their silence," he says. "I am pleased slugs aren't loud. If they had a noise of constant volume, life would be more challenging for everything.

"In 2008 I started saying things out loud to groups of people without wanting them to respond verbally. Some call this 'stand-up comedy', some call it 'stand-up poetry'. Whatever it is, I started doing it and have continued to do it ever since."

Auton has created five Edinburgh Fringe shows so far, The Sleep Show being his 2016 offering, and he is now working on his sixth. "Every year I pick a subject that is important to me and write an hour-long show about it. So far I have done The Yellow Show, The Sky Show, The Face Show, The Water Show, The Sleep Show and I am now working on The Hair Show," he says.

"I've had my writing that I recorded into my computer by talking played on the radio by Jarvis Cocker, Cerys Matthews and Scroobius Pip and shown on the television by BBC1, BBC 2 and Channel 4. I've had two collections of my writing and drawings published by Burning Eye Books and am working on my third collection."

So, who exactly is Rob Auton? "I am a man who likes the sky and the ground in equal measures. Sometimes I like the sky more than the ground," he says. "I like people. Who do I like? I like Joe Strummer. I like Francis Bacon. I like Richard Brautigan [the American novelist]. I love my family."

Who likes Rob Auton? Comedian Dan Kitson, for one, who was moved to say: "He is entirely compelling to watch. He’s a poet/writer/talker and it’s funny in parts but that’s not the point – there is something else happening. I’m not entirely sure what it is but it’s great and it wallops you in the belly."

Tickets for Sunday's 8pm show are on sale at £8 at burningduckcomedy.com or at £10 on the door.
