YORK'S clash of words, Say Owt Slam, celebrates its second anniversary with its 11th poet versus poet slam on September 24 in The Basement, City Screen, York.

"Since 2014, we've been running a series of high-energy slams, where poets pit their words and wits against one another," says York performance poet Henry Raby, the 7.30pm event's co-host.

"Poets get three minutes each, and the audience judge on their favourite performer. The poet who finds themselves in second place will receive £15, but the winner will get £30 and bragging rights.

"Raw, fun, anarchic and challenging what spoken word can be, if you’ve been to Say Owt before you’ll know it’s a raucous evening of powerful poetry; if you’ve never been, now’s the time to come check it out."

The September 24 battle of wits will be the first since Say Owt Slam "blitzed the Edinburgh Fringe with a successful slam" in August.

"We’re now returning to our hometown and The Basement for more spoken-word merriment at our 2nd Birthday Slam. We expect each poet to bring passion, humour, powerful performances and insightful writing, proving that spoken word is a raw and unmissable medium," says Henry, who asks poets interested in taking part in Say Owt Slam to send a line to sosyork@hotmail.com with the incentive of free entry to the event for performers.

"The night, as always, will be compered by the ever-loveable duo of myself and Stu Freestone; most of our events have sold out, or been just shy of selling out, so we advise you to grab your tickets from The Basement as soon as possible."

Say Owt Slam will welcome a special guest on the night: Scott Tyrrell. "Scott has been a poet since the turn of the century," says Henry. "A former member of the Poetry Vandals, he has performed his work around the country, Europe, on a bus, on a plane and at Stratford East Tube station in rush hour."

Tyrrell is an award-winning comedian and winner of many major poetry slams, including the Great Northern Slam, the UK Anti-Slam and the BBC Fringe Poetry Slam 2015, and he has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe, WOMAD, the Big Chill, Kendal Calling and Glastonbury, where he was blogger in residence in 201. He also is the author of two collections of poetry, the latest being Grown Up, published by Red Squirrel Press.

Tyrrell will lead a workshop in The Basement from 4pm to 6pm for £5 before the night's slam, for which tickets cost £7 at picturehouses.com/cinema/York. You can follow Say Owt Slam via facebook.com/sayowtslam or on Twitter @SayOwtSlam
