AUSTRALIAN comedy icons Sammy J and Randy are quite the successful man-puppet-musical-comedy duo: nominated for a host of awards worldwide, last year knocking out a smash-hit performance at the Sydney Opera House and debuting their own TV sitcom.

The pair delight with a gut-busting set of various vulgar musical numbers, accompanied only by an electric keyboard. Songs as rousing as they are ridiculous are interspersed with snippets of banter, reminiscent of a band headlining a concert – but with Scrabble rather than soundbites and Pac Man on speed.

A significant amount of the show is spent in mock-spontaneity, with "arguments" between the duo breaking out every other song and the biggest laughs provoked by shock and reaction on stage.

The act opens with the sound of a phone ringing reverberating around the tent, before Sammy’s voicemail reveals he’s tested positive for – well, we never quite reach that part.

The pair are sex-obsessed in fact, joking very early on about the age restrictions on the performance (16 plus). But any crudeness is offset by the sheer silliness of the act, and Sammy J and Randy’s triumph lies in their ability to disguise political incorrectness as idiocy. Ironic then that Donald Trump comes up.

At one point, the duo tease “they’ll always remember the day Sammy J and Randy first played in York”, but that’s not the most ridiculous line of the night. While I’m not convinced they’ll quite take the UK by storm, I know I won’t be forgetting this Australian hit in a hurry.
