TUESDAY'S headliners at The Burning Duck Comedy Club in York "bear something of a resemblance to each other", teases promoter Al Greaves.

Opening the 8pm show at The Black Swan, Peasholme Green, will be Pippa Evans, an award-winning comedian, actress, songwriter and improviser, who has taken five shows to the Edinburgh Fringe, bagging a nomination for Best Newcomer in 2008 for her debut show, Pippa Evans And Other Lonely People.

"Since then, Pippa has gone from strength to strength, performing regularly on BBC Radio 4 institution The Now Show, as well as making guest appearances on Dave’s Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled and Comedy Central’s Drunk History," says Al.

Pippa has featured on BBC3’s sketch comedy show Live At The Electric and is a core member of The Showstoppers, whose improvised new musicals, based on audience suggestions, have enjoyed West End residencies and a six-part series on BBC Radio 4. She guests frequently at improv nights across London and is a semi-regular cast member of The Comedy Store Players too.

"Since we booked Pippa last month, she has won the 2016 Chortle Music & Variety Award, while Showstoppers won Chortle's Best Character, Improv or Sketch Act," says Al. "Showstoppers also won the best entertainment and family category at last Sunday's Laurence Olivier Awards, so we're delighted to welcome Pippa to our intimate comedy night in York."

Loretta Maine: "car crash of a rock star"

Pippa will be accompanied by psycho-intense singer-songwriter Loretta Maine, her other main attraction . "She makes Courtney Love look well-balanced," says Al. "This pill-popping, booze-abusing, bunny-boiling car crash of a rock star also has her own show and her own band, Dog Vagina."

Tuesday's show will be hosted by Red Redmond and will feature two rising acts, including Chris Cantrill, who peddles a mix of surreal stand-up and storytelling, often incorporating illustrations that "push PowerPoint presentations to well over 100mb".

"Chris's common themes include studies into the paranormal and the ongoing maintenance of his Tamogotchi babysitting farm," says Al, who adds: "We're also look forward to the debut performance of Birthday Bread Man, and if you like birthdays and you like bread, then you'll love Birthday Bread Man.

"In addition, to continue our tradition of offering baked treats as a further incentive to come, we'll be serving free Macaroons, and there'll be artwork for sale by artist and dancer Eleanor Mason too."

Tickets cost £5 at burningduckcomedy.com or in person from Bison Coffee House, in Heslington Road, and The Inkwell, in Gillygate, or £7 on the door from 7.45pm.
