ROB Rouse is in the house on Saturday night headlining the Hyena Lounge Comedy Club gig at The Duchess in York, where Jen Brister, Chris Betts and Peter Otway will be on the 8pm bill too.

"Rob Rouse is without a doubt one of the most exuberant and likeable performers on the circuit," says promoter Toby Clouston-Jones. "He has a real talent for characterisation, he can be anything from a one-man soap opera to an anthropomorphic Polish dog, and everything in between.

"But his greatest asset by a long chalk is his unquenchable energy; he just performs the hell out of everything, delivering his act with such force that everyone is dragged along in his slipstream."

Saturday Night Lounge opening act Jen Brister

Jen Brister will be the opening act before heading over to Leeds to headline at The HiFi Club. After working as a radio presenter on BBC6 Music, hosting assorted shows including the weekend breakfast slot, she burst on to the comedy scene in 2009 as part of the Comedy Zone show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

She has since performed at the Fringe regularly, taken solo shows to comedy festivals in Australia and Asia and sold out numerous runs at the Soho Theatre in London. Now she is preparing her new Edinburgh show.

Chris Betts returns to York to take the middle slot. He began his comedy career in his native Montreal, Canada, going on to perform all over Europe and North America and to make appearances at Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival, SXSW in Austin, Texas, and the Zulu Comedy Festival in Denmark.

In 2014, he was chosen to be part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve at the Edinburgh Fringe, heading back there last summer to present his first solo show, Social Animal.

Compere Pete Otway

"Chris's humorous thoughts have been published in the Huffington Post and the Alarmist and he voices a number of characters in the cult-hit animated comedy Sam Sweetmilk," says Toby. "His mind is a curious place, where the philosophical meets the ridiculous with his shows being a perfect balance of incisive social satire and complete silliness."

Pete Otway will be this weekend's compere. "Since his first gig in 2010, he's established himself quickly as a natural and original comic, known for mixing a razor-sharp wit with an affable charm and creative writing," says Toby.

Tickets for Saturday Night Lounge are on sale at £14 on 01904 641413 or at hyenalounge.com or £16 on the door from 7pm.
