SAY Owt Slam, York's only regular poetry slam night, is doing "something special" for its big summer show by participating in the Great Yorkshire Fringe.

On August 2, in The Tea Pot, on Tykes Green in Parliament Street, all four champions from the previous slam contests will compete at 5.30pm for the title of Say Owt Slam Champion of Champions in "a no-holds-barred slam-off of epic proportions".

"Across 2014-2015, Say Owt Slam has hosted four sell-out events featuring dozens of powers, fantastic guests and rowdy lovely audiences," says co-host Henry Raby, the York performance poet and playwright.

"The standard of our slammers was incredible and the atmosphere charged with energy. It really proved what a diverse poetry and spoken-word scene exists in York and the UK."

Past champions Ian Winter, Jack Dean, Marina Poppa and Samra Mayanja each will be allotted three minutes to brandish their way with words, whereupon the audience will vote for their favourite poet. "It makes the performances that extra bit more exciting, adds a new dimension on poetry and engages the audience in keen listening," says Henry. "There’ll be several rounds, so poets have a chance to showcase different material, and we're especially excited because each poet from each slam is uniquely different."

Introducing the four word warriors, Henry says: "Say Owt Slam #1’s winner was Ian Winter, Hull’s gruff, plain-speaking, poetry-reading playwright- bard, who speaks his mind with the same sharp honestly of Philip Larkin and isn’t afraid to tackle modern-day topics.

"Jack Dean, who won SOS #2, is a crowd-pleasing, well-versed, story-telling word weaver and he's toured the UK with his solo work from a hip-hop background. Marina Poppa was our champion for SOS #3; she's full of fiery feminism, beautiful body positively and sublime spoken word.

"Finally, our last winner was Samra Mayanja, who blew us away in her strong-willed performance with her spoken word so sharp it’s like a whirlwind of razor words."

Say Owt Slam #5 will be hosted by the regular York duo of the ever bouncy Stu Freestone, a nominee for Best Spoken Word performer at the Saboteur Awards, and Henry Raby, who will "probably have a new band T-shirt on".

"So, who do you want to win? Who will get your vote? Who will be crowned Say Owt Slam Champion of Champions and win a cash prize?" asks Henry. "Come down to The Tea Pot on August 2 to find out; tickets are a mere £5."
