ROBIN Ince is taking time out from comedy to spend more time with family.

This means his latest and potentially last tour – but not if the title of the show is anything to go by – is a final hurrah of sorts, with Ince ditching any narrative structure for his set as he "wouldn't want to flood the market".

True, it is daunting at first for the audience to see the 46 year old come on and declare that after 24 years of performing stand-up, he no longer has to impress anyone this time around. However, the crowd is up for the bumpy ride, and what we get instead is a series of anecdotes from Ince's recent years of gigs and working on the Radio 4 show Infinite Monkey Cage, and some truly fascinating psychological facts.

It's stand-up with a high level of scientific intellect, as well as copious references to films you may not have seen or heard of, but for the most part you don't need to have done the secondary reading to enjoy Ince's boundless enthusiasm for these nuggets of information.

Working in some very accurate impersonations, energetic mime and rambling set-ups, Ince's punchlines aren't planned so much as happened upon, so not all jokes reach their satisfying ending. Nonetheless, it's consistently funny with some very tender segments, and ends on an interesting piece on emotional content in films.

Interesting is just the right word for Robin Ince: he's definitely somebody who would have (and did indeed offer) a chat with his audience after the show. With only 11 shows left of his stand-up career (for now), Ince is an alternative comedian worth catching before he leaves the stage.
