AUSTRALIA’S rising stand-up star, the exuberant Bec Hill, makes her York debut at the Burning Duck Comedy Comedy Club, at the Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green, on Tuesday.

Al Greaves, promoter of York’s new alternative comedy night, says: “Bec is a comic, writer, presenter and actress whose solo shows and YouTube videos have garnered close to 200,000 views globally and gained her a cult status in both Australia and the UK.

“She has a talent for incorporating arts and crafts into her stand-up routines; creating an unforgettable comedy style that she calls ‘paper-puppetry’. Along with her positive attitude, this has made her a sought-after performer for both adults and children.”

One support slot goes to Sam and Tom, an anarchic double-hander made up of comedic wunderkinds Tom Burgess and Sam Nicoresti.

“In principle, they’ll be rocking up to knock out some skits, argue among themselves, talk about their time as famed child stars (Nickelodeon, 1997) and generally nail the gig,” says Al.

Burning Duck also gives slots to Si Beckwith, a Newcastle stand-up and writer with a passion for storytelling, silliness, shenanigans and alliteration, and newcomer Dan Triscott.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing Sam and Tom as I was a massive fan of their previous incarnation as sketch group Staple/Face,” says Al. “I also performed at Sam’s night, Bedtime, Showtime, Go To Bed Right Now Show, in Sheffield, which was very silly and lots of fun. Tom also performed as a new character who was so funny that I’ve asked him to do it again.

“I also did an Edinburgh Fringe show with Si Beckwith in 2013 so it’s always a pleasure to watch him again and see him improving. A particular highlight was at last year’s Galtres Festival, where Si decided to ditch his material and got the crowd to re-enact the children’s gameshow Knightmare instead.”

Al reports that last month’s Burning Duck night with cult Scottish comedian Phil Kay received the stamp of approval from Kay himself. “He enjoyed it immensely, describing it as ‘a delightful celebration of human life, on a Tuesday night’,” he says.

Some £4 earlybird tickets may still be available for Tuesday online at burningduckcomedy.com, where details of upcoming shows can be found.
