EAST Yorkshire played its part in the creation of Irish comic Dylan Moran’s new tour show, Off The Hook, which heads to Harrogate and York this week.

The garrulous and gloriously grumpy Moran spent three nights at Pocklington Arts Centre last November crafting it into shape. Crib notes beside him, he recorded each Work In Progress gig as he experimented with new material in the studio gallery, fitted out cabaret-style with tables.

Each night he switched the order, noted what worked, swigged from his wine glass, and reaffirmed his status as Ireland’s supreme comic since Dave Allen. Off The Hook is lyrical, poetic yet fearlessly frank too on religion, politics, parenthood, middle-age spread, and irritating young men, whether spouting their mystical language in mobile phone shops or the coffee house attendant with the “Edwardian cricketer’s beard” lecturing Moran on best bean practice.

If his hook was sharp last November, it should be even sharper at Harrogate Theatre tonight and York Barbican on Sunday, both shows starting at 8pm. Box office: Harrogate, 01423 502116 or harrogatetheatre.co.uk; York, 0844 854 2757 or yorkbarbican.co.uk
