A COMEDIAN with the surname Kay and the initial P for his first name name will be in York on Tuesday.

Not the northern Englishman Peter Kay but the original P Kay, Scottish legend, mirth maker and storyteller Phil Kay, doyen of the Edinburgh Fringe.

Phil will be playing York’s new monthly alternative comedy solution, The Burning Duck Comedy Club, upstairs at The Black Swan in Peasholme Green.

"He's a shambling and rambling comedian, who we're delighted to have confirmed to headline our next night," says Burning Duck promoter Al Greaves. "He's a genuine comedy and festival legend, who won Best Stand-Up at the British Comedy Awards once and also had his own Channel 4 show, Phil Kay Feels.

"Every time I’ve seen him live, he delivers a masterclass in shambolic musical and storytelling hilarity, creating a uniquely magical comedy experience at every show."

Support comes from the 2013 BBC New Comedy Award finalist Peter Brush, from Leeds, with his deadpan thoughts on hypochondria, eternal life and the substitution of dead pets.

"Peter is one of the most exciting new Yorkshire acts to emerge in recent years," says Al. "He's already performing regularly at weekend clubs around the country, while also presenting innovative one-man pantomimes at the Edinburgh Fringe, accompanied by a Dictaphone."

Look out too for a short set from York comedian James Christopher in his challenging new double act with Maxie Wade, The Walk Out Show, which he introduces thus: "Far too many acts want people to actually sit down and watch them. James Christopher and Maxie Wade have no time for such needy attention seeking and they want you to walk out," he urges.

"They will go to extraordinary lengths to ensure that you cannot endure The Walk Out Show."

The night's comperes will be Jack Gardner and Sam Megahy from Burning Duck's alternative comedy cousins Silly Billies in Newcastle.

"I’m looking forward to seeing Jack Gardner present the show," says Al.

"I’ve known Jack since I used to perform with him regularly at nights in the North East, so it’s been a pleasure to see his alternative night become such a grass-roots success in Newcastle."

Burning Duck celebrated its first half-year anniversary last month with cake and a headline set by Lou Sanders. "The night was another success and our homemade cake was so popular that we might make some more with an exciting new recipe, including our star ingredient, Copper Dragon Beer," says Al.

Doors open at 7.45pm for the 8pm start; tickets cost £5 online at burningduckcomedy.com or £6 on the night, NUS and seniors £5.

"Some £4 earlybird tickets may still be available now; please join our mailing list at burningduckcomedy.com for more details," says Al. "We highly recommend tickets are purchased in advance as last month we weren't far off selling out."
