ON St Valentine’s Day, what better way to celebrate than an evening’s entertainment aimed at the (comedy) lovers of York at the Saturday Night Lounge.

The men with all the lines will be Alun Cochrane, Nick Dixon, Jonny Pelham and Sam Avery in the 8pm line-up presented by the Hyena Lounge Comedy Club at The Duchess, Stonebow House.

Cochrane is mid-way through his BBC Radio 4 series Alun Cochrane’s Fun House and is a familiar and favourite act at the Hyena Lounge. His TV appearances include Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Have I Got News For You, Mock The Week and Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Nick Dixon will be making his Hyena Lounge debut. “He’s one of the most exciting acts in the country, set for stardom having been signed by the same management company as Rhod Gilbert,” says promoter Toby Clouston-Jones. “He has just recorded his stand-up material for the new series of The Comedy Store on Comedy Central.

“Nick was one of a select few – chosen from more than 800 applicants – to perform in the BBC New Comedy Awards in 2012, truly cementing his status as a dynamic newcomer by reaching the final of the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny? competition at the Edinburgh festival the same year.”

Jonny Pelham is returning to the Hyena Lounge this weekend. “He was a BBC New Comedy Award finalist last year and runner-up in both the Chortle Student Comedy Award and So You Think You’re Funny in 2013, and he’s been described by reviewers as having echoes of a young Daniel Kitson,” saysToby.

Sam Avery will be crossing the Pennines from his native Liverpool to host the show. “Sam is a regular contributor to BBC 6 Music and he’s a likeable and warm-hearted compere who is always a hit with the Hyena Lounge audiences,” says Toby.
