THE The Burning Duck Comedy Club at The Black Swan Inn is the perfect place for budding comedians to test the water and suss out others working the circuit.

The relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the pub in Peasholme Green set the scene for the night beautifully, as the audience, drink-in-hand, took their seats in a well-sized private room in the upstairs of the pub.

The four acts were enthusiastic and experimental, providing a unique comedy experience for an eager gathering of local supporters. The night’s MC, Jack Evans, engaged with the audience from the get-go and was successful in rousing eager clapping for the performers, Jayne Edwards, Davey Liddle, Tom Little and headliner Phil Ellis.

They provided an eclectic mixture of material, from body-building to curtain-climbing and had most of the audience in stitches throughout. Everyone there was incredibly encouraging and receptive, making this the ideal place for any new or nervous performer to try out fresh material.

With such a wealth of professional and touring comedy now taking place in the city, this alternative comedy night offers a rare opportunity to experience local work first-hand in a comfortable and fun environment.

As with lots of comedy collections, the evening is a luck-of-the-draw, but with tickets at only £5, you’re sure to find something that suits your taste. Overall, it’s something a bit different for a Tuesday night, and a nice way to enjoy a drink with friends in a lovely old pub.
