ONCE he was a copper, now Alfie Moore is a comic.

On Saturday, the Scunthorpe police sergeant turned stand-up comedian will be presenting a full-length preview of his newly extended Edinburgh Fringe hit, The Naked Stun, at Selby Town Hall in an 8pm warm-up for next spring’s national tour.

Moore spent 18 years on the beat in East Yorkshire before taking a sabbatical to try his hand at stand-up and he has since written and recorded his own BBC Radio 4 series, It’s A Fair Cop, whose successful debut this year has led to a re-commission for 2015. He has appeared on several television shows too, most notably on Channel 4’s Confessions Of A Police Officer only the other day.

Based on the true story of Moore’s dogged determination to track down a serial flasher, The Naked Stun is a fast-paced exposition of the seedier side of crime investigation that reaches a shocking conclusion.

Moore came to comedy slightly later than most stand-ups, bringing a wealth of insightful tales from his years as a copper, where his keen humour has been the key to his success and survival. Born and raised on a council estate in Sheffield, he was an apprentice steelworker before joining the Humberside force, and he was inspired to take up stand-up in 2007 after his first taste of live comedy at a comedy club.

The Naked Stun is the laughing policeman’s third full-length show, following on from his comic confessional, Viva Alf’s Vegas, and his Edinburgh Fringe debut, I Predicted A Riot. Apparently, it was originally called I Predict A Riot and and should have been performed a year earlier, but all leave from the force was cancelled on account of the 2011 London riots.

“Alfie is really one of a kind on the stand-up circuit,” says Selby Town Council’s arts officer, Chris Jones. “Through his insights into life on the other side of the thin blue line, his former career has provided a seemingly endless supply of incidents which are nothing short of comedy gold. Alfie has a fantastic dry wit that never fails to produce a barrel full of belly laughs, but there’s also plenty of thoughtful musings on our legal system and the perils of life on the front line, fighting crime.”

Tickets for Alfie Moore: The Naked Stun cost £12 in advance on 01757 708449 or at selbytownhall.co.uk or £14 on the door from 7.30pm.
