GARY Delaney issues an almost apologetic warning to his audience at the beginning of Monday's show, explaining that a lot of his jokes can veer into controversial territory.

Whether this is meant as a threat or a promise, Delaney does follow through on his more risqué jokes. His bawdier material puts you in mind of the older generation of stand-ups, but that’s not to say that his other jokes aren’t quirky or original, because they certainly are.

Delaney offers up a real mixed bag, to the extent that it’s a little hard to pin down his style any more than to describe him as a one-liner comic. To some audiences, an entire show of one liners might prove pretty exhausting, and it can be. Luckily, Delaney offers up his board of natural conversation starters to provide some respite (and some jokes a little longer than 30 seconds).

Delaney’s material is, on the whole, not suitable for the most faint hearted. That said, even if he does offend, Delaney’s quick-fire nature means that nothing too offensive is dwelt on for long. Sure, Delaney takes some cheap shots at dyslexics, gingers, and Scousers, but it’s nothing you won’t have encountered before. The fact that you may have heard variations on these subjects before doesn’t help towards Delaney’s presence in our modern age of comedy, but his gags do instil an air of silly glee you’d be hard pushed to find elsewhere.
