JAMES Acaster’s highly anticipated show Recognise is now on tour, fresh (kind of) from its run at the Edinburgh Fringe.

There’s quite a buzz surrounding it, and with good reason too. Acaster’s slow delivery of Pret a Manger bananas and loopholes – an aspect of his set which he follows up on with excellent in-show continuity – is a delight to watch.

As he starts on his knees, the audience aren’t initially sure what to expect, but there’s a method to the madness as we see his show unfurl seamlessly.

His audience interaction at the beginning wasn’t awkward, and despite his somewhat dismissive attitude toward the crowd, everybody had warmed to Acaster by the end of the night.

His running theme is the most impressive part of the show. Acaster’s story of being an undercover cop, passing as a comedian to infiltrate drug circuits, provides some excellent sequences and ends on an impressively tight punchline (or ‘sweet sweet punch’, as he would put it).

Perhaps, as a quieter comedian, he hasn’t been spotted in the mainstream yet, previously only appearing on panel shows such as Mock The Week and 8 Out Of 10 Cats, where if you aren’t Russell Howard or Jimmy Carr the spotlight isn’t shed on you for too long.

However, Acaster is one to watch, and as the chance to see a three-time nominee for the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Show scarcely comes around, you are recommend to take it whenever it next does.
