ALL of the acts at Saturdays’s Hyena Lounge Comedy Club in York are preparing for next month’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

“That means their material is as fresh and newly polished as it can possibly be,” says promoter Toby Clouston-Jones, who welcomes Martin Mor, Rob Rouse, Adam Rushton and Caimh McDonnell to The Duchess in Stonebow House.

“Headliner Martin Mor is a familiar face to our audiences, blessed with uncanny comic improvisational skills and one of the fastest minds on the circuit as he combines startlingly original material with bold, energetic improvisation.”

Mor had an early career as a juggler, unicyclist, knife thrower, fire-eater, magician and photographic model, whose picture can be spotted on Trivial Pursuit’s Genus Edition on an Arts and Entertainment square, for which he wore a leotard. He went on to write for Challenge Anneka, Mock The Week and Frankie Boyle, regularly supporting the sour Scotsman on tour too.

“Martin’s love of working the audience and inability to remember his script mean that every show is a unique interactive live event, and no two shows are ever the same,” says Toby.

Rob Rouse opens Saturday’s 8pm with his customary exuberance. “He has a real talent for characterisation; he can be anything from a one-man soap opera – think The Archers crossed with Shameless – to an anthropomorphic Polish dog and everything in between,” says Toby. “But his greatest asset by a long chalk is his unquenchable energy . He just performs the hell out of everything, delivering his act with such force that everyone is dragged along in his slipstream.”

Rouse is a television regular, appearing on such shows as Dave’s One Night Stand, 8 Out Of Ten Cats and Sean Locke’s 15 Storey High, hosting Comedy Shuffle With Rob Rouse and presenting the first series of The Friday Night Project.

Liverpudlian Adam Rushton returns to the Hyena Lounge to take Saturday’s middle spot with tales of his years in the Royal Navy and observations of everyday life; gentle Irish comic Caimh McDonnell hosts the evening, bringing charm to his banter with the audience, fresh from supporting Sarah Millican on her Home Bird tour.

Tickets cost £14 on 01904 641413 or at hyenalounge.com or on the door from 7pm.
