VETERAN Liverpool comedian Ken Dodd will play the Grand Opera House in York on September 27 on the 60th anniversary of the very day he began his professional career.

Doddy made his debut at the age of 26 in 1954 and only a decade later, he performed at the London Palladium for the first time, going on to enjoy a record-breaking 42-week sell-out season.

In 1965, he removed his fellow Merseysiders The Beatles from the number one spot with his ballad Tears; today it occupies tenth place in the list of Britain'sTop 20 best-selling records. He was later voted The Greatest Merseysider Of All Time, relegating John Lennon and Paul McCartney into the joint runner-up spot.

Doddy's August 2005 portrait by David Cobley, painted in his dressing room, hangs permanently at the National Portrait Gallery in London; his statue stands in Liverpool Lime Street Station; and his waxwork figure can be seen at Madame Tussauds, Blackpool.

Tickets for his 7pm show cost £23 or £19 on 0871 3024 or online at atgtickets.com/york
