AFTER his “pleasant surprise” at last weekend’s opening show selling out at the Hyena Lounge Comedy Club’s new York home of The Duchess, promoter Toby Clouston-Jones has Cooked up an Easter Eggs-travaganza for Saturday.

Hyena Lounge favourite Jason Cook headlines the 8pm line-up with support from Marlon Davis and Jonny Pelham and Dave Twentyman linking up the laughs on compere duty.

Geordie motormouth Cook first took the comedy scene by storm in 2007 with his debut solo Edinburgh Fringe show, Confessions, before scooping the Best International Show prize at the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. His 2008 Fringe show, Joy, could not have been named more aptly and in 2012 his sitcom Hebburn was commissioned by BBC2, leading to two series and a Christmas special. Jim Moir (alias Vic Reeves), Gina McKee, Chris Ramsey and Fresh Meat’s Kimberley Nixon joined him in a story based on Cook’s life and upbringing in the South Tyneside town of Hebburn.

“Jason’s style is to be completely honest about everything he talks about,” says Toby. “His ability to lift an entire audience, whether it’s 150 or 3,000 people, and carry them on his journeys, is unparalleled.”

Bright young comedian, improviser and actor Marlon Davis opens Saturday’s show with observations on urban social issues, while Jonny Pelham takes the middle slot, fresh from making the finals of So You Think You’re Funny and the BBC New Comedy Award. “Jonny has a huge future with his self-deprecating tales and could well become as big as Jon Richardson,” predicts Toby.

Doors open at 7pm at The Duchess in Stonebow House. Tickets cost £14 on 01904 641413 or at hyenalounge.com
