HUNDREDS of bookworms, young and old alike, celebrated World Book Day in York and North and East Yorkshire.
The United Nations-backed event, designed to promote reading and run in more than 100 countries, saw children at Cundall Manor School, between Easingwold and Boroughbridge, dress up as white rabbits, Mad Hatters and Cheshire cats to celebrate their chosen book for the day, Alice In Wonderland.
The 3D film of the book, which had its royal world premiere earlier this week, features ex-Cundall Manor teacher, Stephen Fry, as the Cheshire Cat.
Meanwhile, youngsters and staff at Busy Bees Nursery enjoyed stories and spent the day dressing up as some of their favourite storybook characters.
Busy Bees Nursery manager Ali Cousins said: “We’ve had a lovely day with lots of staff and kids dressing up.
“We really wanted to focus on our story listening as well today to encourage the children’s reading.”
Yorkshire author Ian Clayton visited Tesco’s Tadcaster Road store to back a campaign to get adults to read more.
Mr Clayton signed copies of his novels for staff who have signed up to a challenge to read six books in six months.
