We’ve all heard the saying ‘where there’s muck there’s brass’. Yorkshire has plenty of others sayings too that are pithy, humorous and downright rude by turn.
Dalesman has collected a couple of fistfuls of the very best for its tiny little book of Yorkshire proverbs – a book that will fit easily into your back pocket. Try this: “Bread is t’staff o’ life but Yorkshire pudding’s a good crutch.” Or how about this: “Shake a bridle over a Yorkshireman’s grave an’ ’e’ll gerrup an’ steal t’hoss.” Great fun.
If proverbs aren’t your thing, how about funny signs? If you’ve ever done a double-take glancing at a funny road sign or public notice, the Book Of Funny Signs could be just for you. “This Door Will Be Alarmed If Used Inappropriately”, says one. “No Trespassing. Violators Will Be Shot. Survivors Will Be Shot Again,” says another. But this is our favourite, propped outside a barn: “Oven Ready Peasants, £5.50 a brace.”
And finally, if you love Yorkshire and you love crosswords, then you’re bound to love the Yorkshire Crossword Book. Volume IV is out now. Here’s just one clue: “May bother (anagram) – Ryedale village (9 letters).” Any suggestions, anyone?
