Cycling battle goes the distance

COMPETITION is hotting up in a cycle challenge between bikers from York and a rival city.

The contest – in which York and Cambridge battle to see which can persuade the most people to take up cycling – has reached the end of its first week.

York’s team has attracted 23 new cyclists, compared with Cambridge’s 18, in Cycling City York’s biggest challenge to date. About 50 teams from York, representing businesses, schools, colleges and other major employers, are taking part.

Between now and April 3, teams will compete in one of six different challenges, depending on their size, with new cyclists logging a journey on the York Cycle Challenge website to ensure they contribute towards their team’s efforts.

“It’s fantastic news that York is leading at the end of the first week,” said Cycling City York programme manager Graham Titchener.
