So, who are you not?

I CAME across this quote the other day: “It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not”.

After it stopped scrambling my brain, I got to thinking about the truth of that statement when it comes to our working life.

After all, as a coach I know that it is the limiting beliefs that people hold that stop them getting what they want in their lives and careers. And most of those limiting beliefs are by definition, big fat negatives about ourselves.

Here are a few you might have tried on for size over the years:

• I’m not good at numbers

• I’m not organised

• I’m not very confident

• I’m not a great salesperson

• I’m not decisive

I could fill this whole newspaper with these kind of “I’m not…” statements that I have heard over the years.

(Some of them have even been heard in my own head, if that makes you feel any better.) Now here’s this week’s magic trick And like all magic, you don’t have to believe in it for it to work.

The brain doesn’t recognise a negative properly. So when you are saying “I’m not…” something, there is a part of your brain that is searching for ways to BE…good at numbers, organised, very confident,a great salesperson, decisive etc. You can help it along by simply dropping the NOT!

To o simple? Well, try it. Just for this week, catch yourself “NOT-ing” and then re-state whatever you have said (even if only in your head) so that you are telling yourself that you ARE. It may beggar your belief system to begin with but trust me, before long you’ll start to look for the positive evidence that you ARE that thing.

And I know you’ll find it. Because you can be and already are, anything that you really want to be.
