Don’t settle for less than you deserve

I came across these words recently and they stopped me in my tracks: Life is too short for second best and not long enough for regrets.

As we draw near to the end of 2009 there are many people feeling that they have been simply unable to take risks in their life and work. It’s been challenging enough to hold on to what they’ve got.

Maybe this year has given us all a dose of reality and thrown so many challenges at us that it’s made us a bit risk averse. And perhaps that’s not a bad thing, to keep us safe.

But there is a big difference between staying safe -and settling for less than you really deserve.

Sometimes we tend to go to the other extreme and simply block out the potential for change. There’s a piece of old marketing wisdom that says you should actually spend MORE on promoting a business during tough, recessionary times than in the periods when things are booming. It takes some guts to do that. It takes even more guts to have bigger and bolder faith in yourself and your career when jobs seem more fragile than ever.

Actually, the truth is that there is always opportunity for you to find the life and work of your dreams.

When so many people stop looking there is more for you to see, if you open your eyes to what is out there. If right now isn’t the time to take that calculated risk, when will be the right NOW?

So dare to dream a little this week.

Think about where in your life and career you are settling, for all sorts of good and maybe bad reasons.

Imagine what your life and work would be like if you no longer settled for anything less than you truly deserved.

Now, stay safe AND take the right small first step towards it. You know how to do that. Trust yourself.
