Unemployment falls in North and East Yorkshire

UNEMPLOYMENT has fallen again in North and East Yorkshire – but risen marginally in York.

The latest Government statistics show the number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in North Yorkshire fell by 73 between July and August to 8,912, or 2.4 per cent of those eligible.

In East Yorkshire, the number of claimants fell by 86 to 6,691, or 3.2 per cent of those eligible, and the number fell in the Selby district by 43 to 1,486, or 2.8 per cent.

But in in Ryedale it rose by 56 to 666, or two per cent of those eligible, while in York, it rose by five to 3,253, or 2.4 per cent.

But York council leader James Alexander said the city continued to show resilience and was “up at the top” in terms of cities bucking the national trend, along with Oxford and Cambridge.

He said the council’s pro-growth agenda had jobs secured in the future at Monks Cross.

He said: “We are not complacent though and will continue this drive to reduce the claimant count and get people into work, as self-sufficiency is key to their well-being and to that of the city.”

Nigel Adams , MP for Selby and Ainsty, said the fall in the district was “very welcome”, and the figure now was considerably lower than when the coalition Government was formed in 2010.

But he said he was not going to be complacent, which is why a Jobs Fair he was organising at Selby College on October 4 was all the more important in matching employers with those looking for work.
