students are gaining valuable work experience in a new scheme launched by a North Yorkshire local authority.
Selby District Council in partnership with Selby College, is taking on students one day a week as part of a Young Apprenticeship programme. Students in Years 10 and 11 are studying for a vocational qualification combining learning in the classroom, college and the workplace.
Coun Gillian Ivey, deputy leader of the council, said: “Helping young people get the skills they need in the working world is really important. This opportunity is a great way of giving the next generation of workers the practical help they need to succeed in their chosen careers.”
Luke Glover 15, and Alex Richards, 16, are spending one day a week working with the council. The pair started with the council in February last year and have undertaken a range of administrative roles within the organisation.
Luke said: “We know competition for jobs will be fierce and we will need to be able to show future employers our skills.
“This placement means that we can get the proper, practical experience that we need and, hopefully, when the time comes for us to start looking for jobs this experience will help us stand out from other applicants.”
