11 jobs face axe at Fenwick

JOBS are under threat at one of York’s flagship stores after its bosses announced plans to shake up the way it operates.

A consultation process is due to be launched over the future of 11 positions at Fenwick, with the potential cuts focusing on managerial and administration posts.

The proposed reorganisation is set to concentrate on the company’s York store – with its other bases around the UK being unaffected – as it battles “extremely challenging” trading conditions.

It also says that it hopes it will not need to make compulsory redundancies and that other positions within the business may be available to those affected, as well as confirming the possible losses will not hit the store’s shop-floor staff.

A spokesman for Fenwick Ltd said: “Trading conditions for the retail trade have been extremely challenging, and as a result we are proposing a reorganisation of some of our managerial and non-selling functions.

“If we proceed, approximately 11 roles will be at risk of redundancy. These are at our York store.

“We will soon begin a period of consultation, but in the event that we proceed with our proposed reorganisation, we hope that some of those at risk may be in a position to take up voluntary redundancy and that others may apply for one of the vacancies we have in other areas of the business.”

The independent firm, launched by J J Fenwick in Newcastle in 1882, has 11 stores across the UK and employs about 2,400 staff. Its York branch has been a fixture on the city’s shopping scene since the Coppergate Centre opened in 1984.

The store avoided job losses last year when Fenwick considered making redundancies at its Newcastle branch, just after posting pre-tax profits of £41.7 million and increased turnover of more than £283 million.

unfortinatly it still operates as in 1984!, this shop has failed to move with the times!
Upstairs is a joke, it should be like house of fraser or a bit better than debanhams with the prices they charge, but it sells old fashoned out of date clothing!
the mens department is a joke, expensive mid make cloths, well the little choice there is.
this is a real shame as this shop could be a real decent place, plenty of room upstairs for modernisation. get some stlye and decent brands and the shop would boom!
carry on as you are and you are doomed. thats when people lose their jobs.

The York Branch seems to be the poor relation, compared to the Newcastle branch.

I was in Fenwick's yesterday and cannot undestand what"voiceofreality" is moaning about- what other brands does he/she want to see? I was spoilt for choice and certainly don't consider myself to be old fashioned!

This news is no surprise to me. About 2 weeks before Christmas I asked a member of staff about a Duplo kit I had seen the week before. She said it was sold out and I asked if she could order it for me so I could collect it from them before Christmas. She said quite brusquely that this would be impossible.
So I went to the Lego site on-line, which I had never used before ,ordered it and received the kit in 3 days, brilliant service. Shops like Fenwicks need to cherish their customers and move with the times or ,like me ,their customers will find an alternative and maybe never return to the shop and local people will be out of work

Always had good service, particularly in the cafe, the only complaint there is that there seems to have been staff cut backs already which is noticeably in that the tables are not being cleared promptly as customers finish their meal or coffee. Looks untidy and prevents others from occupy the tables.

It's an anachronism, and it'll go the way of Schofields and Lewis's. The place to cut staff is the circus people who man the makeup counters. I've seen less fake tan and perfume on Terry Smith!

I am a professional shopper and consider Fenwick's in York to be one of the poorest shopping experiences I have encountered. The staff lack enthusiasm for both the product and the client. Their buyer needs to explore for new products. Set up a consumer panel for feedback I could go on......

and that what i said, they havn't the vision to move forward! any business that can't move with the times is destined for failure!
But if you work there and see the lack of improvment then its no suprise the staff lack certain elements of the job!
