MORE than 1,200 people attended a jobs fair in York this week.
The event was held at the York Railway Institute on Tuesday, and organised by City of York Council, York Learning, Job Centre Plus and Learning City York, to give employers and jobseekers advice, and the chance to speak to each other about opportunities in the city.
A total of 1,231 jobseekers attended the fair, along with 50 businesses, including Hiscox, McDonalds, Barratts Homes, Amey, Cyclops Electronics and G4S Security.
Council leader James Alexander said: “This event has gone from strength to strength and its down to partnership working between support agencies and businesses who have come together to ensure that there are employment opportunities and real world useful advice for York residents.
“Hopefully those people who’ve attended the event will benefit from this, develop their skills and ultimately, their future careers.
“Ensuring we have jobs in the city is a key priority for the council and one we are actively working to support through our jobs and growth agenda, with events like these and key infrastructure investments.
“Recent falls in the number of residents claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance has been pleasing, but there is still more work to be done.”
