AN East Yorkshire councillor is to call for assurances that more funding will be freed up to get young people back into work.

Coun Jane Evison, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for economic development, said the authority’s employment skills team had enjoyed success in finding jobs and apprenticeships for young people.

She now hoped money would be made available both to continue and expand its work.

Coun Evison is due to ask council leader Stephen Parnaby to confirm this at a full council meeting on Wednesday.

Almost 1,500 18 to 24-year-olds in East Yorkshire are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance – just over six per cent of the overall age group.

Coun Evison said: “This level of unemployment in young people gives cause for concern across a number of factors, including health and wellbeing.”
